Her parents moved to Assiut where she attended the Faculty of Science, at Assiut University and graduated valedictorian of her class with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1965. She was appointed assistant professor at the Faculty of Science, where she met Ibrahim Mikhail, her future husband and lifelong companion. Two years later, they married in Cairo on May 1st, 1967.

Mary and Ibrahim moved to Germany, where they both obtained their PhD degrees. Mary earned her PhD degree in Computer Science in 1972 from Tübingen University. After one year as a lecturer at the University of Tübingen, she worked as a department head at Siemens from 1973 to1980. During their time in Germany, they were blessed with their daughter, Ireny.
