On Being Christian - God's Ever-Present Unending Love
| "Remind yourself often - that He has granted you many favors in the past and has shown you His love. He has created you out of nothing in His own likeness and image, and has made all other creatures your servants; He has delivered you from your slavery to the devil, sending down not one of the angels but His Only-Begotten Son to redeem you, not at the price of corruptible gold and silver, but by His priceless blood and His most painful and degrading death. Having done all this He protects you, every hour and every moment, from your enemies."
Think of a person you just don't like. A person that every time they walk into a room you are in, you walk out. A person that the very thought of makes you physically sick or angry. Think of this person and remember that God is in love with this person. Why is this called to mind? Because there will be a time when you will face the terrible sin of disappointment in yourself. That the devil will catch you and try to bring you down to such a level of depression that you may loose hope. At this very moment, remember that person who formerly despised and remember that God loves them - so that you will remember that if God loved them, He surely loves you. This will give you strength to resist the devil's pulls downward. Celebrate God's love for you in all things. Loving Him and giving Him thanks regardless of the condition that your state may be in at that time. In other words, there is no good and bad - there is only good unto those who believe and to those who choose not to believe. For you see, God love us all equally, knowing fully all our faults, weaknesses and failures - even we don't. So there is only goodness. Sure the non-believer may be facing a terrible time, but this is only that He may bend his stubborn knees and look to God for help, for strength, for guidance. And only goodness befalls the believer - even the tortured one. For God knows our very depth of our ability and never measures out more than one can handle. So when you find yourself facing the darkness of doubt, the fog of despair remember that though this failure in you may have cause you to doubt - God already knew it was there before you realized it. And that this terrible ordeal you are facing was solely for the purpose to force you to face this sin that it may be revealed, confessed, repented upon and absolved. This is done that you may enjoy eternity with God in everlasting life. Do you know a single gourmet chef that, when preparing a fancy meal, simply grabs a potato, vegetable or herb without washing it first? Why does the chef do this? Because the dirt will spoil the taste - it has no place in the feast. That is all that God is doing with us, continually. We sin by nature, both in knowingly and unknowingly. So He occasions opportunities to wash us of the dirt of this world that we too may be found at the feast. We who need Him, do little to earn Him. But He, who needs us not, does everything to be with Him. God is Love - unending love. |
